County Jail Rosters by State
510 county pages across 41 states, 124,780 custody records at the most recent sync. Open a state directory to browse its published county pages.
Why coverage is uneven
The spread between states is wide: Louisiana (59), Georgia (44), Arkansas (41) at one end, and 5 states with a single county at the other. That has almost nothing to do with population, crime or how large a state is.
County jails do not write their own software. They buy a jail management system, and whether a county appears here depends on whether its vendor publishes a machine-readable roster at all. Some vendors serve dozens of counties in one state and expose a clean public feed, so an entire region becomes available at once. Others publish nothing, or only a search box that will not return a full list. A handful of large metropolitan counties run bespoke systems that fall into the second group, which is why some of the biggest jails in the country are missing while small rural counties are present.
The practical consequence: this directory is not a random sample of US counties, and totals here should not be read as a national figure. Roughly 3,000 counties exist; the ones covered are the ones whose software happens to publish. We would rather state that plainly than let the numbers imply a completeness they do not have.
What a state page contains
Each state directory lists its covered counties with the current record count for each, so you can see at a glance whether the county you need is here before clicking through. County pages carry the roster itself along with the jail's address and phone number, and guidance on bond, sending money, visitation and finding the related court case.
If the county you are looking for is not listed, the person may still be in custody there. Call the sheriff's office directly. The guide to finding someone in custody covers what to do when a county is not covered, and our data report explains how the collection works and where its limits are.
