Money on a jail account is not spending money in the ordinary sense. It pays for a short list of things that make custody survivable.
What the account actually covers
Commissary purchases such as food, coffee, stamps and hygiene items. Phone credit, which is how calls get paid for. Electronic messaging or tablet time where a facility offers it. In some facilities, co-pays for medical visits.
How deposits are made
Very few jails take cash at the desk any more. Almost all use a third-party vendor, and each facility contracts with a different one. Deposits are made online, by phone, or at a kiosk in the lobby. You will need the person full legal name and, in most systems, the booking number, both of which appear on the county roster page.
What it costs
Vendor fees are charged per deposit and are proportionally worst on small amounts, sometimes approaching ten percent. Sending one larger deposit costs less in fees than several small ones. The fee is shown before you confirm; check it, because it varies by facility and payment method.
Timing
Deposits usually post within a few hours, though weekend and holiday processing can be slower. Commissary itself is typically ordered on a fixed weekly schedule, so money arriving after the cut-off waits for the next cycle.
What happens to the balance at release
Remaining funds are normally returned to the released person, often on a prepaid debit card rather than as cash, sometimes with a fee attached. Money you send belongs to the account holder, not to you, and you cannot claim it back.
Common scams
Someone contacts you claiming to be a jail officer, bondsman or attorney and asks for gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency to secure a release. No jail, court or legitimate bondsman collects money this way. Deposits go only through the facility official vendor. If a caller creates urgency and asks for an unusual payment method, hang up and call the jail directly on the number listed by the county.
